Marcus Antonius / Gaius Octavius
Marcus Antonius / Gaius Octavius

Gens: Antonia / Julia
Moneyer: Marcus Antonius / Gaius Octavius
Date and mint: 39 BC - ?

Obverse: Bust of Octavian, right, with beard. Dotted border.

Legend: ANTONIVS IMP (alrededor abajo Caduceo)

Comment: Among the theories about this denarius, in which the bust of Octavius Augustus appears on the obverse and the Legend ANTONIUS IMP on the reverse, is that it was minted to remember the peace between Augustus and Mark Antony when he married Octavia. Another version points to the peace of 39 BC between Sextus Pompey, Mark Antony and Augustus, but the existence of another denarius with the bust of Mark Antony and the reverse identical to this one, with the name of Octavian, makes us think that the first version is the most correct.
