Comment: The denarius of Lucius Thorius Balbus was minted in Rome in the year 105 BC. The gens Thoria is a poorly documented family, and this magistrate is its best-known representative. The author of this denarius was originally from Lanuvium, as indicated by the bust of Juno Sospita that appears on the obverse. Cicero describes him as a man very fond of pleasures and given to mocking religion, although he also points out that he died defending the Republic, which gives him a contradictory profile.

There are hardly any known positions of Balbo apart from his work as a moneyermaker. His complete affiliation appears in the legend L THORIVS BALBVS, and his political career did not leave a major mark on the preserved records.

The historical context in which this coin emerges is especially critical: in 105 B.C. Roma suffered the catastrophic defeat of Arausius against the Cimbri and Teutons, with tens of thousands of casualties and a climate of general insecurity. This military disaster paved the way for the figure of Marius and his reforms, which would transform the Roman army in the following years.

The obverse shows the bust of Juno Sospita, protector of Lanuvium, wearing the characteristic goat skin. The legend I S M R alludes to Iuno Sospita Mater Regina. With this choice Balbo clearly indicated his origin and the importance of the local cult, linking the divinity of his hometown with the protection of Roma. The reverse depicts a bull charging to the right, accompanied by its name. The animal expresses strength and energy in a time of military crisis, but also functions as a nomen loquens: Thorius is related to taurus (bull), turning the image into a visual and propaganda signature of the magistrate himself.
