Comment:
The Plautia gens was a plebeian family. Although it was not one of the oldest or most prestigious, several of its members held positions of power, including consuls and other important magistrates. His influence grew in the final stage of the Republic, actively participating in Roman politics.
The monetary man responsible for this issue is also known for having been a candidate for the position of aedile in Rome.
The year 60 B.C. It was a key moment in Roman history, as that year the First Triumvirate was formed between Caesar, Pompey and Crassus, an informal alliance that changed the course of Roman politics. This era was marked by intense competition between political factions and the increasing concentration of power in the hands of these leaders. Rome, although still a republic in theory, was seeing its traditional structures weakened by the ambitions of these powerful men.
The bust of Neptune on the obverse may symbolize the importance of the seas and naval conquests to Rome, especially during a time when maritime control was vital to expansion and the defense of its interests. The trident, his weapon, emphasizes his dominance over the sea.
On the reverse, the figure of Jupiter on a chariot, launching a lightning bolt, symbolizes the absolute and protective power of the god over Rome. Jupiter is a representation of divine authority and order in the underworld, reminding the Romans that their success depended on the favor of the gods. The chariot is also a symbol of military triumph and glory.
