Comment:
Lucius Verus belonged to the Antonine dynasty, adopted son of Antoninus Pius. He was named co-emperor alongside Marcus Aurelius in 161 AD, in an unprecedented gesture of shared power. Although less disciplined in character than his adopted brother, his government was fully integrated into the structure of the Empire and actively participated in the campaign against the Parthians.
The coin was minted shortly after the joint ascension of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus to the throne, following the death of Antoninus Pius in 161 AD. The Empire was experiencing a time of uncertainty with eastern threats - especially the war against the Parthian Empire - and the aim was to convey an image of foresight, order and abundance with the new imperial duo.
The naked head of Lucius Verus represents a serene and classic image of the prince. The legend “IMP L AVREL VERVS AVG” presents his official name as Imperator Lucius Aurelius Verus Augustus, reflecting his newly assumed authority.
The figure of Providentia, goddess of foresight and favorable destiny of the State, holds a globe (symbol of universal dominion) and a cornucopia (symbol of abundance). This iconography expresses the desire for stability, planning and prosperity under the new shared government. The legend “PROV DEOR TR P II COS II” underlines his role as tribune and consul for the second time, and alludes to the providence of the gods in his mandate.
