Comment:
Galba did not belong to any prominent dynasty, but was one of the emperors in the Year of the Four Emperors (68–69 AD), a period of instability after the death of Nero.
Galba briefly assumed power after Nero’s suicide in 68 AD. His short reign was characterized by severity and administrative reform, but he was unpopular with the troops, leading to his assassination in January 69 AD.
The Year of the Four Emperors (68–69 AD) was a period of great instability after the death of Nero, when various generals and political figures fought for control of Rome. Galba, after receiving the support of the Senate and some legions, was proclaimed emperor in June 68 AD. His government focused on austerity, but his harshness and lack of rewards for his troops made him unpopular. He was eventually killed in January 69 AD, betrayed by his Praetorian Guard, triggering the ascension of Otho.
Symbolism of the obverse and reverse: On the obverse, the naked bust of Galba appears, showing his role as emperor. On the reverse, the oak wreath with the inscription SPQR/OB/CS (“Senatus Populusque Romanus Ob Cives Servatos”) celebrates his actions in favor of the Roman people, highlighting his commitment to protecting citizens.
