Denarii of Hadrian's Travels
Hadrian, emperor from AD 117 to 138, spent slightly more than half of his reign away from Rome visiting the provinces.
According to RIC, among aurei, denarii, sestertii, asses and dupondii, there are references to twenty-nine locations, with reverses referring to four types of motifs:
- Adventus, celebrating Hadrian’s arrival.
- Exercitus, reviewing the troops.
- Restitutor, for the construction of public works.
- Provincia, a direct reference to the province visited.
In this case we will limit ourselves to the eight that were struck as denarii and refer to provinces.

From this simple WildWinds index we obtain the following list of provinces that appeared on denarii with any of the four motifs (Adventus, Exercitus, Restitutor, Provincia). It should be noted that no denarius was struck with the Exercitus motif. ADVENTVS: Africa; Hispania. RESTITVTORI: Achaia; Africa; Gallia; Hispania; Macedonia. PROVINCIA: Aegyptos; Africa; Alexandria; Asia; Italia; Nilvs; Germania; Hispania.
Also from the same simple WildWinds index we obtain the following list of the 29 provinces represented on any type of Hadrianic coinage (silver, gold or bronze): Achaia; Aegyptvs; Africa; Alexandria; Arabia; Asia; Bithynia; Britannia; Cappadocia; Cilicia; Dacia; Delematia; Gallia; Germania; Hispania; Italia; Ivdea; Libya; Madeconia; Mavretania; Moesia; Nicomedia; Nilvs; Noricvm; Phrygia; Raetia; Sicilia; Syria; Thracia.
