Denarii of Hadrian's Travels

By Edu Mas (Don_Jupi)

Denarii of Hadrian's TravelsHadrian, emperor from AD 117 to 138, spent slightly more than half of his reign away from Rome visiting the provinces.

According to RIC, among aurei, denarii, sestertii, asses and dupondii, there are references to twenty-nine locations, with reverses referring to four types of motifs:

  • Adventus, celebrating Hadrian’s arrival.
  • Exercitus, reviewing the troops.
  • Restitutor, for the construction of public works.
  • Provincia, a direct reference to the province visited.

In this case we will limit ourselves to the eight that were struck as denarii and refer to provinces.
