Comment: The Severan dynasty was founded by Septimius Severus in AD 193 after civil war. Severus consolidated imperial power and established a strong dynastic line centered on his family. Geta, his younger son, was made Caesar in AD 198 and promoted within the succession alongside his brother Caracalla. The political climate of the early third century was defined by Severan dynastic propaganda, military authority and the need to present the imperial family as united, despite tensions between the brothers. Geta's coinage reflects this program, presenting him as a legitimate member of the imperial house and future participant in power. The obverse emphasizes his role within the dynasty. The reverse legend TEMPOR FELICITAS within a laurel wreath suggests prosperity under the Severans, with the wreath evoking victory. Yet the message of felicity also contrasts with the later rivalry between Geta and Caracalla, which ended with Geta's murder in AD 211.
