Comment: The Severan dynasty was founded by Septimius Severus after a period of instability and civil war. Of Punic origin, the family came from Leptis Magna in Africa. The Severans consolidated power through reforms and a strong reliance on the army. Septimius Severus, father of Caracalla, was the first emperor of the dynasty, and his legacy continued through his sons. Caracalla, his elder son, was raised to co-emperor with his father in AD 198 at about ten years old and later ruled alone after Severus' death in AD 211. He is known for his severity and for the Constitutio Antoniniana, which granted Roman citizenship to all free inhabitants of the Empire. In AD 199-200, Severus and Caracalla were consolidating their authority after defeating usurpers and preparing eastern campaigns. The obverse shows Caracalla laureate and draped, stressing his imperial status and victory. The reverse, with Victory advancing left with a wreath, proclaims eternal triumph through the legend VICT AETERN, a message addressed to both people and army.
