Comment: The Flavian dynasty began with Vespasian, and after his death in AD 79 his son Titus assumed power. The Flavians consolidated the Empire after civil-war disorder, establishing a firm government that allowed Rome to recover politically. Under Titus, the dynasty maintained its reputation for stability and control, although his reign was brief and marked by major events such as the completion of the Colosseum and the eruption of Vesuvius. Before becoming emperor, Titus distinguished himself as a general in the Jewish campaign, ending the First Jewish-Roman War with the capture of Jerusalem in AD 70. As emperor he faced the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 and a major fire in Rome in AD 80, responding with generosity and effective relief. The coin belongs to the context of his reign, when public benefaction, dynastic continuity and imperial legitimacy were central themes. Its obverse and reverse imagery should be read within this Flavian program of restoration, victory and public stability after the upheavals of AD 69.
